Description

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) refer to several extremely common clinical conditions involving the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and adjacent structures. TMD is one of the most common causes of orofacial pain and headache and is associated with basic functional limitations, such as difficulty chewing, speaking, and yawning. In addition, patients with TMD tend to suffer from other debilitating pain syndromes, such as migraines, tension headaches, and neck pain – thus presenting a challenge for clinicians.
In this course, participants will learn effective, evidence-based assessment and practical management of individuals with TMD and associated conditions.

Class hours

This course lasts 16 hours (2 full days).

Course objectives

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • To know the updated scientific foundations of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction in the cranio-mandibular region.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of serious (non-musculoskeletal) medical problems in people with craniomandibular pain (e.g. red flags) and know how to react appropriately.
  • To know practically how to assess, recognize and identify common clinical patterns in people with TMD.
  • To practically use relevant clinical reasoning for the management of people with TMD and associated conditions.
  • To effectively and safely treat people with TMD using manual techniques and therapeutic exercises.

Course format

Instructor-led course: lectures (40%) and practical sessions (60%).

Description

The upper cervical region is a distinct area of the spine that requires a unique clinical rehabilitation approach. It is highly mobile and possesses precise and sensitive motor skills. In addition, it has significant neurological connections with the vestibular, ocular, and trigeminal systems. Any noxious stimulus or dysfunction in this area can easily lead to craniofacial pain (cervicogenic headache) and sensorimotor complaints such as dizziness. This region responds well to manual therapy techniques combined with specific therapeutic exercises.

In this course, participants will learn the effective, evidence-based assessment and practical management of individuals with musculoskeletal pain, dysfunction, and sensorimotor disorders associated with the craniocervical region.

Class hours

This course lasts 16 hours (2 full days).

Course objectives

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the current scientific foundations of musculoskeletal pain, dysfunction, and sensorimotor disorders related to the CC region.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of serious (non-musculoskeletal) medical problems in people with headaches and dizziness. Know the appropriate actions to take.
  • Know how to assess, recognize, and identify upper neck involvement in patients with chief complaints of headache and dizziness.
  • To practically use a relevant clinical reasoning model for the management of individuals with headache and sensorimotor complaints.
  • To effectively and safely manage patients with headache and sensorimotor complaints related to the upper neck.

Course format

Instructor-led course: lectures (40%) and practical sessions (60%).

Cervico-Brachial (CB) – 16 Hours

Course title

CB Therapy

Instructor

Tzvika Greenbaum, BPT MaPT (Manip & Sports) PhD
Asistent: Alexandru Mǎzǎreanu, PT, DOMP, MSKUS

participant

Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors

Description

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions. Both current research findings and expert opinions suggest a good response of people with neck pain to modern musculoskeletal rehabilitation (better than people with low back pain). To achieve good results, a thorough clinical assessment that highlights specific deficits is necessary.
An effective rehabilitation approach is based on recognizing specific clinical patterns related to the cervical area.
In this course, participants will learn effective, evidence-based assessment and practical management of individuals with musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction in the CB region.

Class hours

This course lasts 16 hours (2 full days).

Course objectives

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • To know the updated scientific foundations of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction in the CB region.
  • To know practically how to assess, recognize and identify common clinical patterns in people with musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction in the CB region (discogenic pain, facet joint disorders, TOS, myofascial pain, nerve root irritation).
  • To practically use a relevant clinical reasoning model for the management of individuals with musculoskeletal conditions related to the lower cervical area.
  • To effectively and safely treat people with musculoskeletal conditions related to the lower cervical area.

Course format

Instructor-led course: lectures (40%) and practical sessions (60%).

Dry Needling for Orofacial Pain and Headaches – 9 Hours

Course title

Dry Needling for Orofacial Pain and Headaches

Instructor

Dr. Tzvika Greenbaum, BPT, MaPT (Manip & Sports), PhD
Asistent: Alexandru Mǎzǎreanu, PT, DOMP, MSKUS

participant

Physiotherapists and dentists with previous qualification in dry needling and training in the rehabilitation of temporomandibular disorders.

Description

Orofacial Pain and Headache are extremely common complaints in physiotherapy practice. In most cases, the musculoskeletal system plays a leading role in the clinical presentation of orofacial pain and headache (primary or secondary role).
Dry needling of specific myofascial structures of the face and neck, which have been shown to be relevant in orofacial pain and headache, has been shown to be highly effective both clinically and through research.
In this one-day workshop, participants will learn and practice safe and effective dry needling approaches for the myofascial structures most commonly involved in patients with orofacial pain (mainly TMD) and headache (cervicogenic, tension-type, and migraine).

Class hours

This course lasts 9 hours (1 full day).

Course objectives

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  1. To clinically assess, recognize, and identify common myofascial structures that may be sources of pain in individuals with orofacial pain and headache.
  2. To practically apply the clinical reasoning model for the management of people with orofacial pain and headache.
  3. To effectively and safely apply dry needling techniques to multiple myofascial structures relevant to patients with orofacial pain and headache.

Course format

  • Theoretical lessons (20%)
  • Practical workshop (80%)

Advanced Cranio-Mandibular (ACM) – 8 Hours

Course title

TMD & OFP – Advanced Skills

Instructor

Dr. Tzvika Greenbaum, BPT, MaPT (Manip & Sports), PhD
Asistent: Alexandru Mǎzǎreanu, PT, DOMP, MSKUS

participant

Physiotherapists with relevant previous training in the rehabilitation of temporomandibular disorders.

Description

Orofacial pain (OFP) is a common form of pain experienced in the face and/or oral cavity. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), the most common cause of OFP, refers to several extremely common clinical conditions involving the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and adjacent structures.
Although most patients with TMD respond very well to manual therapies and exercises, some patients present with chronic and persistent disorders that require extremely precise and skilled management.
In this one-day practical workshop, participants will be presented with four real and complex case studies, which will be analyzed in small groups using a problem-based learning (PBL) approach. For each case study, several important and relevant techniques will be demonstrated and practiced under supervision.

Class hours

This course lasts 8 hours (1 full day).

Course objectives

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  1. To practically use a relevant clinical reasoning model for the management of individuals with TMD and OFP.
  2. To select and practically apply an advanced manual technique relevant to several complicated clinical presentations of TMD and OFP.
  3. Suspect and recognize dangerous medical conditions that can mimic TMD and OFP.

Course format

  • Instructor-led & PBL course: lectures (20%)/PBL (40%)/practical (40%).
